Caring for a loved one can be meaningful and fulfilling, but it also comes with real challenges.
Family caregivers often face exhaustion, stress, and feelings of isolation as they juggle care responsibilities with their own health, work, and family demands.
Taking breaks is not selfish; it is essential.
That is the role of respite care.
Temporary relief that gives caregivers time to rest and recharge while ensuring that their loved one continues to receive safe and compassionate care.
One important resource is the National Respite Locator Service (NRLS) which was designed to make finding that relief easier.

Created and maintained by the ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center, the NRLS is an online directory that connects caregivers to respite care services across the country
Families can search by state and explore programs that range from in-home care , assisted living, or state or community-based agencies. The value of the NRLS lies in its ability to give caregivers a place to begin when they feel overwhelmed. Having one national directory reduces the stress of trying to navigate a complicated system on your own.
Each listing includes basic information such as contact details and a description of services, allowing families to connect directly with providers. You can access the tool here. Disclaimers
It is also important to remember that not every respite service is free. Some programs may be covered through Medicaid, Veterans Affairs benefits, or state-funded caregiver support programs, while others require private payment.
The availability of respite care can vary widely from one community to another, and the quality of services depends on each provider’s standards. Families are encouraged to ask questions about training, licensing, and background checks before choosing a provider.
While the NRLS is an excellent starting point, not every provider may be included in the directory. Caregivers may also want to check with local senior centers, health departments, or community organizations for additional options.
The National Respite Locator Service is a directory provided for informational purposes only and does not include every provider. Being listed in the database does not mean an organization is endorsed, and not being listed does not imply a lack of endorsement. The service does not verify background checks, references, or qualifications. Caregivers are responsible for reviewing providers carefully before hiring.

My mission is to guide caregivers through that journey with compassion, humor, and practical strategies that truly make a difference.
I’ve created an online course designed to give caregivers the tools, resources, and support they need to feel less overwhelmed and more confident in their role.
